Terminology

When looking at an application, it is important that both the customer, and ACE are talking about the same thing using the same language. Listed below are simple explanations to help you.

SHOCK ABSORBERS

Past names and definitions include: Dampers, Dash pots, Buffers, Shockers, Stops...

Description: An independent hydraulic unit, used to arrest a moving mass.

Available in body sizes from 6 mm in diameter to 230 mm in diameter.

VELOCITY CONTROL UNITS

Past names and definitions include: Hydro-checks, Dampers, Dash pots, Buffers, Stops.

Description: These units are used to control the feed rate throughout the stroke length of a particular application (Drilling) and are not ideal for arresting moving mass at high velocities.

DVC UNITS (Dual Velocity Control)

Past names and definitions include: HB Dampers, Damper, Gas Struts

Description: Ideal if you require a different feed rate on the in and out strokes. Adjustment at each end of the body, individually for both the in and out stroke. Mounted fixed at each end, e.g. Clevis end fittings.

HB DAMPERS

Past names and definitions include: Gas Struts, Gas Spring, Feed Control, Shock Absorbers

Description: An independent hydraulic unit used to control a moving mass or dropping lid. This product looks almost identical to a Gas Spring and often referred to as that, however the HB Damper provides no propelling force in either direction. This unit gives adjustable damping resistance in both directions unless the customer has specified damping in one direction only.

GAS SPRINGS

Past names and definitions include: Gas Struts, Gas rams, Boot Openers, Dampers.

Description: A highly pressurised cylinder filled with inert gas to give the required pushing or pulling force to suit your application.

ROTARY DAMPERS

Past names and definitions include: Air pots, air motors

Description: Small round units with or without a gear on the spindle shaft. Rotary Dampers provide a smooth rotary motion for lids, flaps, drawers, and tables. Examples of applications are in car ashtrays and photocopier lids.
