The Ins and Outs of Gas Struts

Gas struts are used to control the opening and closing mechanism of lids, doors etc. Without gas struts there would be nothing to control the speed of this and would result in much noise and slamming of doors, which could be quite dangerous if they are particularly heavy.

So, how do gas struts work? Gas struts are made up of a piston and rod which is within a larger pressure tube. The piston tends to be made of steel which has a coating applied to it. This coating reduces the amount of friction caused during movement. If gas struts are needed for use in an industry where rust is a concern, then they are generally made from stainless steel. Gas struts do not work efficiently in cold environment; they do not lift as well when the temperature drops.

Gas struts work by gas being released at a high pressure to generate energy. The system is self-contained and sealed to prevent loss. When force is applied to the rod, the gas is compressed and the level of pressure increases. This, in turn, enables the piston to move.
